Aligned to: Create Meaningful Impact
A flyer goes home. A social media post gets published. A reminder email gets sent. Then attendance is lower than expected, volunteers don't respond, or families say they never heard about the event. It's frustrating because technically, communication happened.
But sometimes we're so focused on getting information out that we forget the real goal isn't sending messages—it's helping people understand, engage, and take action.
Strong parent organizations don't view communication as a task to check off a list. They view it as a leadership tool. Before communicating, they take time to think about who needs the information, what they need to hear, and why it matters. Effective communication isn't measured by what was sent. It's measured by what was understood.
Instead of simply announcing an event, leaders take a step back and ask:
"Who needs to hear about this?"
"What do they need to understand?"
"How can we help them see why this matters?"
For example, promoting a family event might include:
A save-the-date announcement several weeks in advance
A reminder that explains the purpose and value of attending
Communication through multiple channels
A follow-up message celebrating participation and impact
Rather than relying on a single flyer or post, communication becomes a plan—not an afterthought.
The CLEAR Communication Framework™ can help guide the process:
Clarify the Purpose
Learn the Audience
Establish the Message
Activate the Plan
Reinforce the Impact
Think about a recent event or initiative. How many times was it communicated?
Did your communication explain why it mattered, or only what was happening?
Were you communicating for awareness—or for engagement?
Which audience may have needed more information or a different message?
When communication is intentional, people don't just receive information—they understand the purpose and are more likely to engage.
