Aligned to: Plan Your Year
As things get started, it’s easy to jump straight into planning. Back-to-school events, fundraisers, spirit nights, teacher appreciation—there’s a long list, and everyone wants to get moving. Without realizing it, the board starts planning activities before deciding what actually matters most. That’s when the year starts to feel busy… but not always meaningful.
Strong parent organizations don’t start with events. They start with priorities. When you take time to define what matters most, everything else becomes easier—what to plan, what to continue, and just as important, what not to take on. Clarity upfront prevents constant decision-making later.
Before locking in a calendar, the board takes a step back and asks: “What kind of impact do we want to have this year? “ or “What does our school community really need right now?”
Your priorities might sound like:
Rebuilding family engagement
Better supporting teachers
Creating more inclusive events
Once that’s clear, the calendar builds around those priorities—not the other way around.
What are the top 2–3 things that really matter for your school community this year?
If everything goes well, what would make you say, “This was a successful year”?
What might you intentionally not take on this year?
When you start with clear priorities, you lead with purpose—not just activity.
